Playing in his first game since being named England’s Test captain, Root began his innings by striking three consecutive boundaries. He finished as the top scorer with 58 runs off 40 balls, helping his team reach the 138-run target with four balls remaining.
Root collaborated with Phil Salt, who contributed 46 runs off 36 deliveries, to build a vital 77-run opening stand. Although Salt narrowly escaped early dismissal due to a no-ball, he was eventually out lbw. Following the departures of Rachin Ravindra and Jordan Cox, Root ensured the win by finding the ropes with a reverse scoop before completing the final single.
This result elevates Welsh Fire to second place in the standings, while Birmingham Phoenix remains at the bottom after suffering their third consecutive defeat. Earlier, Phoenix collapsed from a strong position of 53-1 to 79-5, ultimately setting a total of 137-9. Lockie Ferguson and Marco Jansen were the standout performers for the Welsh Fire bowling unit, each claiming two wickets.
