UEFA Turns Against Infantino After FIFA Abandons Private Funding Scheme

Gianni Infantino has canceled a $20 billion private investment plan for FIFA following heavy criticism from UEFA and other confederations, leading to a significant loss of confidence in his leadership.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino was unable to stabilize his leadership position on Saturday, even after canceling a controversial proposal to introduce private investment into the World Cup. UEFA, representing European football, had spearheaded the resistance to this plan, threatening to boycott FIFA tournaments if it proceeded. Although they accepted the withdrawal of the proposal, UEFA stated that Infantino has lost the trust of the football community due to his secretive and poorly handled approach.

This development followed a public retreat by Infantino, who has faced intense scrutiny regarding his path to re-election. Only days earlier, FIFA had suggested a plan to create a commercial entity named FIFA Forward Enterprise, aiming to generate $4.2 billion by valuing the project at $20 billion. The scheme promised member associations a $20 million payment by 2027, but the backlash was immediate.

UEFA accused the 56-year-old Swiss leader of violating his 2016 campaign promises to maintain transparency and recognize that FIFA’s finances belong to its member associations rather than the president himself. UEFA labeled the attempt an opaque, back-room deal. Other organizations, including the Asian Football Confederation, CONCACAF, and CONMEBOL, also expressed disapproval or demanded more clarity on the project’s structure.

The situation escalated with the resignation of senior advisor Carlos Cordeiro, who criticized the proposal as detrimental to the future of the sport. Infantino ultimately declared the plan dead, acknowledging that it had sparked unnecessary division. He expressed a desire to restore unity within the football community and refocus on global development efforts.
