The Catholic Diocese of Otukpo recently reported the disappearance of Kelvin Ochai, a seminarian, terming the event a significant cause for concern. Rev. Fr. Joseph Aboyi Itodo, the Diocesan Chancellor, confirmed that the incident took place this past Wednesday at the Bishop’s Residence located in Asa III, Otukpo, Benue State.
Most Rev. Michael Ekwoyi Apochi, the Bishop of the Diocese, has communicated his sorrow regarding the situation. He requested that parishioners and the public offer prayers for the safe return of the seminarian. The Diocese is actively working toward securing his release while also praying for others facing similar situations throughout Nigeria.
Authorities have provided a different perspective on the matter. DSP Orchia Aondogwu, speaking for the Benue State Police Command, stated that there is no official confirmation of a kidnapping. According to the police, the seminarian went to bathe in an area separate from his living quarters and subsequently vanished. At this stage, the police are treating the case as a missing person investigation.
Aondogwu noted that claims of a prior abduction attempt two weeks ago were never formally reported to the police. Law enforcement officials are currently conducting an investigation to clarify the events surrounding the disappearance.
