Illegal mining operations in Gangtu village, located within the Bali Local Government Council of Taraba State, were abandoned once again as members of the Anti-Illegal Mining Task Force arrived for a raid. Jamu Emmanuel Lyon, the chairman of the task force, noted that the frequent desertion of these sites indicates that ongoing surveillance and enforcement efforts are effectively hindering unauthorized activities across the region.
Following intelligence reports that illicit activities had restarted at the site, the task force returned to Gangtu over the weekend. While the team arrived quickly, they found that the miners had already vanished into the surrounding vegetation, leaving their gear behind after allegedly being tipped off about the raid. Although no individuals were taken into custody, Lyon viewed the retreat as evidence that illegal operators feel the mounting pressure from authorities.
Lyon emphasized that this was the second time in two weeks that the site had been cleared by fleeing miners. Despite the lack of arrests, he stated that the team remains committed to purging Taraba State of illegal mining. To improve results, the task force is bolstering intelligence networks and collaborating with local community leaders and vigilante groups to create a more effective alert system.
The authorities are currently documenting the abandoned mining machinery and makeshift shelters found at the scene with plans to destroy them. Lyon issued a stern warning that anyone attempting to reclaim or use this gear will face legal action. He also called on local residents to assist by reporting suspicious activity, reaffirming that protecting state resources requires active community participation. The task force plans to maintain consistent patrols and operations across all identified hotspots to ensure future compliance.
