He argues that the persistent focus on individual presidential agendas by key opposition figures, particularly Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, is paving the way for President Bola Tinubu to secure an effortless re-election.
Lukman, now a notable figure in the African Democratic Congress, voiced these frustrations during a recent appearance on Arise News. He expressed deep concern that opposition leaders are repeating the exact strategic blunders that shattered their effectiveness during the 2023 campaign season. Despite his own legal efforts to maintain party viability, he emphasized that legislative or judicial victories are meaningless without genuine political unity.
The former APC chieftain highlighted that the current administration’s lack of accountability is being exacerbated by a fractured opposition that fails to offer citizens a cohesive alternative. He questioned whether these leaders prioritize their own personal aspirations over the urgent need to rescue the nation from its current economic downward spiral. Frustrated by the lack of progress, Lukman recently suspended his membership in the ADC to pursue broader, non-partisan consultations.
Addressing the state of electoral integrity, Lukman argued that neutrality is a standard that must be demonstrated by the Independent National Electoral Commission through its actions, rather than verified by executive endorsement. He called for a shift away from militarized election environments, favoring a model where voting is viewed as a standard civic duty. Ultimately, Lukman remains convinced that unless opposition leaders set aside their personal interests to rally behind a single, credible candidate, the 2027 election will likely serve as little more than a coronation for the incumbent.
