Father apprehended after dropping two children from a three-storey building in Aba

A man in Umuobe, Aba, was taken into police custody after throwing his two children from a third-floor balcony, an act that resulted in the hospitalization of both the children and the father.

An unidentified man, estimated to be around forty, tossed his two children from the top level of a three-storey residence in the Umuobe district near Aba. Following his actions, the man jumped from the same height after reportedly issuing threats to his spouse.

Although the children suffered multiple injuries, they fortunately survived the fall. Local bystanders heard the distressed cries of the children, which prompted them to intervene, secure the victims, and transport them to a nearby medical facility for emergency care.

Authorities from the Nigerian Police Force were notified by the local community. Upon arriving at the scene, officers took the father into custody and transferred him to a separate medical facility for treatment. While some residents speculated that the man may have been under the influence of narcotics or possibly suffering from a mental health crisis, these claims remain unverified.

DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Abia State Command, confirmed the incident took place on Thursday, July 30, 2026, around 6:00 p.m. She stated that the police have officially launched a formal investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the event.
