The President clarified that the administration’s aggressive stance is primarily focused on protecting allies like Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces an existing ICC arrest warrant. Throughout July 2026, the United States has ramped up diplomatic efforts to undermine the court, threatening new sanctions and encouraging member states to exit the treaty.
Secretary Rubio labeled the ICC an illegitimate body, stating that the U.S. has decided to force the organization to change its ways after failed attempts at internal reform. While neither the United States nor Israel are signatories to the Rome Statute, the Trump administration remains deeply hostile toward the court’s jurisdiction. Rubio highlighted that nations like Chad and Venezuela have recently signaled their departure from the ICC, urging others to do the same.
