A passenger bus crash in northern Algeria resulted in 25 fatalities and 44 injuries on Friday. The vehicle veered off the road and fell into a ravine located in the El Karma district of Boumerdes Province, situated approximately 50 kilometres from Algiers.
Algeria’s Civil Protection agency reported that the bus was en route from Sétif when the driver lost control. Rescuers arrived at the scene quickly, moving the survivors to local medical facilities while the search operation lasted several hours.
Officials are investigating the cause of the disaster. Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb inspected the wreckage and the ongoing rescue efforts. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced a three-day national mourning period to commemorate the victims.
This incident adds to a troubling trend of deadly transport accidents in the region. Recent history includes an August 2025 crash that killed 18 people and another accident in the Bechar region that resulted in 14 deaths. Government data from 2025 shows 3,838 total road fatalities and over 37,000 injuries, highlighting significant ongoing concerns regarding national road safety.
