South Korean golfer Haeran Ryu moved to the top of the leaderboard at the AIG Women’s Open after a clutch birdie on the final hole at Royal Lytham & St Annes. The 25-year-old is now positioned to chase her third major title of the season, a feat only achieved by four other women in history.
Ryu overcame a difficult beginning to her second round, where she sat three over par through the opening five holes. She recovered impressively with five birdies, finishing two under for the day and maintaining her momentum from her recent victory at the Evian Championship. Ryu currently holds a one-stroke advantage over Japan’s Shiho Kuwaki, who moved into contention after a solid one-under-par performance.
Overnight leader Jeeno Thitikul slipped back to five under par following a round of 73, matching American Yealimi Noh. England’s Lottie Woad remains in the mix at two under par, despite a back-nine performance that saw her drop two shots. Meanwhile, world number one Nelly Korda improved her standing with a 68, placing her alongside other notable competitors like Charley Hull, who is also at two under par.
