NAFDAC Confirms Ongoing Prohibition of Sachet Alcoholic Beverages

NAFDAC reaffirms its commitment to the ban on sachet alcoholic drinks, citing the need to protect minors and improve public health despite mixed reactions from consumers.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reiterated that the prohibition on small-volume alcohol remains fully in effect. Dr. Festus Ukadike, the agency’s South East Zonal Director, confirmed during a recent interview that authorities are actively enforcing this policy against manufacturers and distributors.

Dr. Ukadike explained that enforcement efforts now focus on removing existing sachet products from the marketplace. Businesses are still permitted to sell alcohol, provided the packaging meets the minimum requirement of 200ml per container. Officials have already conducted raids and made several seizures across Enugu, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, and Anambra.

Protecting the well-being of Nigerian youth serves as the primary motivation for this ban. Dr. Ukadike emphasized that restricting access to these small packets will encourage healthier lifestyles and reduce dangerous consumption habits among minors. Addressing concerns regarding economic impact, the director stated that public health remains a higher priority than commercial gain. The agency anticipates a fully compliant market within one year.

Public response to the regulation remains divided. While some individuals support the health-focused initiative, others worry that the policy limits access for low-income consumers. Some citizens suggested that restrictions should focus on specific locations like motor parks, while others highlighted the prevalence of school-aged children purchasing these easily concealable drinks.
