The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Defence has announced plans to create a strategic framework to execute the decisions reached at the 2026 South-East regional security summit in Umuahia, Abia State. Rear Admiral Oluwale Bankole (Rtd.), Special Assistant to the Minister of Defence, shared these details while presenting the summit’s official communique.
This initiative, organized alongside the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement, seeks to address ongoing threats in the region. Participants noted that while security conditions have seen progress, significant risks like kidnapping, armed robbery, and violence against public infrastructure persist. Factors such as drug abuse, the spread of illegal weapons, and the enforcement of illegal sit-at-home orders were identified as primary drivers of instability.
The communique highlighted that criminal activities frequently cross state lines, rendering individual state efforts insufficient. Consequently, the report advocated for a unified regional strategy, emphasizing that collective action and intelligence sharing among stakeholders are essential. A key proposal involves creating a joint regional database and utilizing CCTV technology to improve law enforcement efforts. Additionally, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, urged media organizations to prioritize balanced reporting regarding regional news.
