Aloy Ejimakor, who serves as lead counsel for Nnamdi Kanu of the Indigenous People of Biafra, has labeled the ongoing legal action against AAC presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore a hazardous risk. In a public statement issued via X on Thursday, Ejimakor encouraged President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the necessity of pursuing charges rooted in social media activity.
Reflecting on Nigerian history, the attorney cited the 1960s trial of Obafemi Awolowo as a cautionary tale. He argued that similar aggressive actions against political rivals previously ignited tensions that contributed to a military takeover and civil conflict. Ejimakor stated that employing such forceful strategies shortly before an election cycle is a perilous maneuver.
Regarding the recent courtroom presence of Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi, Ejimakor noted it was a missed chance to halt the proceedings. He urged the government to issue a nolle prosequi, effectively dropping the charges, rather than continuing to pursue an active presidential candidate. He concluded that dragging a candidate through a trial during an election season harms the nation’s democratic image and reveals a lack of confidence in the current administration.
