Glenn Gibbins, a representative for Reform UK on the Sunderland City Council, has been formally charged for a social media statement directed at Nigerians that authorities labeled as highly offensive. Prosecutors initiated the charge under the Communications Act 2003 following an inquiry into a 2024 post that proposed using Nigerians as filler for potholes.
The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed the decision to charge Gibbins after assessing investigative findings. A court appearance is scheduled for August at the South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court. Although Gibbins was elected in May 2026, he faced internal discipline from Reform UK earlier this year. The party initially suspended him before reinstating him in June, citing his apology and a final written warning regarding his conduct.
A spokesperson for Reform UK indicated the party is observing the legal process as it unfolds. It is essential to note that under the British legal system, Gibbins retains the presumption of innocence until the court reaches a verdict on the allegations.
