Retired U.S. Army Colonel Chukwuemeka Olumkwo has stated that Nigeria must move beyond reliance on military force to address its escalating security issues. Speaking at the 6th Sam Momah Annual Lecture Series in Nnewi, Anambra State, the veteran argued that effective solutions require disciplined leadership, unified intelligence efforts, a reliable justice system, and strong community partnerships.
Olumkwo, who served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, noted that crime often flourishes in environments defined by poverty, joblessness, and institutional instability. He specifically highlighted the rise of a lucrative kidnapping industry, which he claims now generates more profit for criminals than the nation’s oil sector. According to his analysis, military intervention accounts for only seven percent of the solution, while political action and enhanced policing comprise the vast majority of the effort needed to restore order.
To turn the tide, Olumkwo encouraged government leaders to focus on economic empowerment for youths, suggesting that public trust in security agencies depends on the state’s ability to provide opportunities. During the same event, Professor Elochukwu Amucheazi criticized political elites for their perceived indifference toward the insecurity affecting ordinary citizens, noting that their personal security shields them from the daily dangers faced by the general population.
Major General Oluremi Fadairo, represented by Brigadier General Solomon Julius, emphasized the necessity of stronger collaboration between the government and its people. He also praised the Sam Momah Foundation for its commitment to building libraries, reinforcing the link between education and national stability.
