Five students from Gateway ICT Polytechnic in Saapade, Ogun State, were taken by unidentified gunmen on Wednesday evening. The attack took place around 8 p.m. at a private student housing facility located on Paraga Road in Ipara-Remo.
Witnesses noted the assault spanned roughly half an hour, involving gunfire that forced students to flee. Some students managed to escape by climbing through the ceiling to reach safety. In response to the crisis, the polytechnic administration postponed examinations originally set for Thursday, though they intend to resume the testing schedule moving forward.
The Students’ Union Government, led by President Akinpelu Bukunmi Timothy, confirmed the number of captives. Union officials highlighted that the hostel’s isolated, bush-surrounded location made it an easy target. They officially notified the Nigeria Police Force and requested that the public ignore sensationalized rumors spreading online regarding the event.
Police spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi verified that the command is investigating the abduction. Tactical teams have been deployed to search the surrounding bushland for the missing individuals. While the police confirmed a kidnapping occurred, they noted that formal identification of the victims as students is still being processed. This violent incident follows the recent death of a student from D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic during a separate robbery in Itori.
