The North-East Development Commission has finalized plans to distribute 10,000 electric vehicles to assist commuters throughout the region. During a Thursday press conference in Abuja, Managing Director Mohammed Alkali stated that the fleet will consist of four-seater taxis, nine-seater tricycles, and 40-seater buses. The commission has already acquired 300 of these buses to facilitate inter-state travel.
Alongside transportation upgrades, the agency is launching a N100 billion, 50-megawatt solar power project using a modular mini-grid system. Furthermore, the commission is addressing water security by installing 1,000 solar-powered boreholes, half of which are already functional. Support for regional recovery also includes a N30 billion fund for small and medium-scale enterprises, aimed at helping business owners rebuild following years of insurgency.
Additional infrastructure efforts mentioned by Alkali include the installation of 1,000 solar street lights and the reconstruction of 40 kilometers of road within an agricultural district in Borno State. Chairman Maj-Gen Paul Tarfa confirmed that the commission remains committed to fulfilling its mandate and delivering impactful projects that justify federal investment.
