During the ongoing sentencing proceedings at Hull Crown Court, numerous families have reported that they remain unable to recover money lost to Robert Bush, the former owner of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors. Bush, 48, admitted to defrauding 172 individuals of approximately £562,000 over an 11-year period.
His admitted charges include fraudulent trading, theft from 12 charities, and failing to provide proper burials or cremations. Victims shared harrowing accounts in court, describing how they were misled by fake funeral plans. One woman, Maxine Hill, recounted how her parents paid cash for plans that were never honored, noting that her bank initially processed a refund but later retracted it, claiming there was no proof of a missing product. Both of her parents have since passed away.
Other statements highlighted a similar pattern of deception, with victims noting that Bush often incentivized cash payments to avoid leaving an electronic paper trail. While approximately £60,000 has been returned to some affected families, many others report that their banks refuse to provide compensation, leaving them financially and emotionally devastated. Bush’s crimes were brought to light in 2024 following the discovery of bodies and ashes in poor condition at his funeral home. His defense team stated that he acknowledges his actions and offers an apology, though the court remains focused on the significant distress caused to those he targeted.
