A technical committee representing traditional rulers and stakeholders has asserted that the establishment of Anioma State is vital for the long-term growth of the Delta North Senatorial District. In a recent announcement, the group called on all candidates vying for the Delta North senate seat in 2027 to prioritize this movement over individual political goals.
The committee, which includes prominent figures like the Obuzor of Ibusa, Obi Prof. Louis Chelunor Nwaoboshi, and other notable leaders, noted that all necessary constitutional steps have been taken, including the formal introduction of a bill and a public hearing. They praised Senator Ned Nwoko for his efforts in leading this legislative proposal.
This push for statehood is rooted in decades of advocacy for Igbo-speaking communities located west of the River Niger. The group highlighted that the South-East is currently the only geopolitical zone limited to five states, causing a disparity in political representation. They argue that creating Anioma State would rectify this imbalance and foster regional development.
While acknowledging the progress made, the committee expressed concern that upcoming election cycles might divert attention from this goal. They have urged regional leaders and interest groups to remain united, discourage division, and continue advocating for the state’s creation to ensure a brighter future for the population.
