Andy Burnham has cautioned employers against depending too heavily on virtual job interviews, arguing that digital platforms fail to effectively showcase a candidate’s passion and personality. During an appearance on the Jimmy’s Jobs of the Future podcast, the Prime Minister questioned how young applicants can truly stand out when restricted to video calls.
As youth unemployment remains a significant concern and job openings dwindle, many companies have transitioned to using AI for screening applications and conducting remote interviews. This shift has drawn criticism from young job seekers who describe the process as cold and impersonal. Research from LinkedIn indicates that 89% of UK recruiters intend to increase their use of AI in hiring throughout the year.
Burnham expressed doubt that these technological trends promote fairness. He suggested that such methods favor candidates who provide rehearsed, formulaic responses rather than those who offer genuine character. To address these recruitment barriers, the government plans to prioritize social value in contract awards, specifically encouraging companies to provide more work experience opportunities for those aged 16 to 18.
