FIFA initiates disciplinary action against Argentina following 2026 World Cup incidents

FIFA is investigating the Argentina national team for multiple disciplinary breaches during the 2026 World Cup, including unsportsmanlike conduct and the display of political messages.

FIFA has officially opened disciplinary proceedings against the Argentina national football team concerning various rule violations during the 2026 World Cup. Allegations include team misconduct, security lapses, the use of discriminatory gestures or chants, and the exhibition of prohibited messages.

A specific point of concern involves a banner displayed by players following their 2-1 semi-final victory over England, which declared, The Falklands are Argentine. This act potentially violates article 13, paragraph 2 c, which prohibits using sporting events for non-sporting demonstrations.

Additional investigations stem from a confrontation following Argentina’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the final. Reports indicate that Leonardo Paredes engaged in shoving opposing players, while Nahuel Molina allegedly struck Rodri as the match concluded. Furthermore, FIFA has launched inquiries involving player Thiago Almada and coach Roberto Ayala.
