Former P-Square member Peter Okoye has issued an apology following public criticism regarding his recent commentary on Nigerian languages. The artist clarified that he never intended to disparage the Igbo language or any other cultural heritage.
The controversy emerged after Okoye responded to a question by asking, “Who does Naija language help?” on the social media platform X. He explained that the discussion originated from a previous post about his children learning French, which he felt was misinterpreted by his followers. He emphasized that he was speaking generally about Nigerian languages and did not target the Igbo language specifically.
While acknowledging that his phrasing could have been better, Okoye expressed frustration over what he views as a deliberate attempt by critics to manipulate his words to harm his reputation. He identified a specific individual whom he believes has consistently targeted him, noting previous instances where he was mocked for his age and career choices.
The singer concluded his statement by asserting that he would no longer remain passive regarding personal attacks. He stated his intention to respond with equal energy to any future hostility directed his way, famously adding, “It’s aura for aura, Egusi for Egusi, Oha for Oha.”
