The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced that it will host 2027 general election polling stations within Internally Displaced Persons camps across Plateau State. Prof. Sam Egwu, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, confirmed this initiative during a recent workshop held in Jos.
According to Egwu, the commission aims to prevent the disenfranchisement of citizens displaced by ongoing regional instability. He emphasized that previous challenges have taught the agency that displacement must not result in the forfeiture of one’s constitutional right to vote.
Electoral security remains a primary obstacle, specifically in areas frequently impacted by banditry and communal violence. To address these threats, the commission is working alongside traditional leaders, security services, and civil society groups to create robust plans for safe, transparent balloting. Egwu stressed that training staff and understanding the local security landscape are essential steps for achieving reliable results in upcoming elections.
