Northern Ireland athlete Kate O’Connor remains the favorite to secure her inaugural senior outdoor gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Heading into the final event of the heptathlon, she holds a commanding position.
After leading the field following Tuesday’s initial sessions, O’Connor extended her lead on Wednesday morning. Strong performances in the long jump, where she leapt a personal best of 6.37m, and the javelin, where she recorded a season-high throw of 52.85m, brought her total score to 5611 points. She currently holds a 258-point lead over England’s Jade O’Dowda.
The competition will reach its conclusion with the 800m race at Scotstoun Stadium, scheduled for 20:55 BST. Meanwhile, O’Connor’s teammate Anna Macauley currently sits in eighth place overall. Macauley achieved a personal best of 6.23m in the long jump, though she placed ninth in the javelin with a distance of 36.99m.
