Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer has stated that he will likely conclude his professional playing career when the current season ends. The 40-year-old goalkeeper shared this outlook during a team training session in Bavaria on Tuesday.
Neuer originally planned to retire earlier but decided to extend his contract by one year, motivated by his enjoyment of the current Bayern Munich squad and coaching staff. Although he has faced recurrent muscle injuries, he has remained a pivotal figure for the club, even as backup keeper Jonas Urbig covered for him during periods of absence last season.
Despite the club’s high ambitions in the Bundesliga and Champions League, Neuer emphasized that he is not viewing this year as a sentimental farewell tour. The veteran shot-stopper, who previously retired from international duty following Euro 2024 before a brief return for the World Cup, joined Bayern from Schalke in 2011. Since then, he has secured 13 Bundesliga titles, six German Cups, and two Champions League trophies.
