Eilish McColgan admitted that witnessing the women’s 10,000m final at the Commonwealth Games on Monday was difficult. As the title holder, she had intended to race on home soil, but a foot stress fracture suffered during April’s London Marathon sidelined her.
At 35, the Scottish athlete previously captured gold in Birmingham, mirroring her mother Liz’s achievement in a landmark career moment. While she has shifted focus toward road racing recently, she had aimed to participate in this Glasgow event. Although that ambition is now off the table, the Dundee-born runner remains optimistic about her future. She hinted at the possibility of competing in one final Games if the marathon is featured in the 2030 Ahmedabad program.
Currently attending the Glasgow festivities, McColgan praised the city for successfully organizing the event on short notice after Victoria stepped down. She believes Glasgow’s model proves that future games can succeed without exorbitant budgets, excessive new infrastructure, or sprawling athlete villages. She emphasized that the Games provide vital opportunities for athletes to represent their nation and build personal confidence, expressing a strong hope that the tradition will endure.
