Amnesty International Nigeria is pressing the federal government to conduct an honest and comprehensive inquiry into the murder of 15 individuals within the Ugboju District of Benue State. The organization highlighted that these incidents signal a worsening risk to human rights in the region.
According to an official notice posted Tuesday, the violence peaked on July 28, 2026, in Efeyi-Ugboju, where gunmen claimed the lives of 14 people. This tragedy followed the death of another local the previous day in Ipom-Ugboju, raising the total confirmed fatality count to 15.
Amnesty International described these events as part of a sustained wave of aggression against Benue South residents. The group stated that locals are suffering under the weight of constant, unprovoked violence. The organization warned that unless authorities act, communities remain vulnerable to armed groups operating without fear of legal consequences.
The agency argued that the government’s inability to stop these raids or prosecute offenders has fueled a cycle of instability and displacement. Consequently, the organization is demanding that state officials identify and try the suspects in a court of law to restore safety and uphold the constitutional duty to protect citizens.
