During the Seventh Ordinary Session of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) Conference of Plenipotentiaries in Abuja, industry leaders and policymakers emphasized the necessity of regional cooperation to secure Africa’s position in the global digital landscape. Nigeria, the host nation, advocated for a unified front to better influence international decision-making regarding digital innovation.
International Telecommunication Union Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin encouraged the continent to evolve from a consumer of technology into a primary contributor to global digital standards. Nigerian Vice President Senator Ibrahim Shettima, represented by Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, stressed that no single nation can achieve digital prosperity in isolation, highlighting that collective action is vital for the continent’s future.
Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, reiterated the nation’s commitment to regional integration. The event served as a strategic lead-up to the global Plenipotentiary in Doha. During the sessions, Nigerian Communications Commission Executive Vice Chairman Dr. Aminu Maida pointed out that while regulatory environments vary, nations share common hurdles like cybersecurity and infrastructure, which require shared learning.
Rimini Makama, Executive Commissioner at the NCC, added that evolving technologies like AI and cloud computing necessitate a shift toward more complex, collaborative regulatory frameworks. The conference concluded with the election of Zambia’s Engr. Kezias Kazuba as the new ATU Secretary-General. Zambian Minister Felix C. Mutati praised the proceedings for embodying the spirit of Ubuntu, while Dr. Tijani, who assumed the conference chairmanship, noted that every decision was reached with a shared vision for a stronger African digital future.
