The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has identified the widespread use of smartphone applications and cloud-based technologies as the main factors behind the surge in mobile data usage. During a recent Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) event, ALTON Chairman Gbenga Adebayo explained that modern devices consume data constantly through background processes like automatic updates, location tracking, and social media synchronization.
Adebayo noted that current data habits differ significantly from those of ten years ago, with the rise of artificial intelligence and cloud computing placing higher demands on network infrastructure. He emphasized the necessity of digital literacy, encouraging users to manage their device settings to avoid unexpected data depletion. Regarding accusations that telecom companies artificially drain customer data, Adebayo rejected these claims as unfounded. He stated that all billing processes are strictly regulated by the Nigerian Communications Commission and use standardized international systems to ensure accuracy.
He further highlighted that telecommunications infrastructure is essential for the growth of the Nigerian digital economy, supporting critical sectors such as banking and healthcare. To ensure long-term progress, he called for improved transparency and collaboration between the government, regulators, and the public to foster trust within the industry.
