The administration of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital in Calabar has officially rejected claims that it organized thugs to confront protesters at its facility. The hospital clarified that the selection process for a new medical director is being handled entirely by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Abuja, not the local management team.
Regarding the recent demonstration, the institution stated that the interview phase for the directorship position occurred on June 11 in Abuja, and no formal results have been issued yet. The facility emphasized that it holds no authority over the appointment, urging those with concerns to contact the federal ministry directly.
The hospital also addressed accusations against its acting medical director, labeling the claims of sponsored violence as malicious falsehoods meant to damage the leadership’s reputation. Security forces, including the Nigeria Police Force and the DSS, were contacted prior to the demonstration after management received intelligence reports. This proactive step was taken to prevent the type of violence and looting experienced during the 2020 EndSARS protests.
Hospital officials noted that staff were instructed to remain peaceful and refrain from confrontation. The event reportedly concluded within 10 minutes without any incidents of assault. Finally, the hospital expressed its support for an independent probe into the situation and pledged to maintain focus on providing specialized medical care for its patients.
