King Charles is preparing to hire a new principal private secretary as the incumbent, Sir Clive Alderton, intends to retire next year. Sir Clive has spent two decades within the Royal Household and will continue his duties until he turns 60 in May 2027 to assist in the transition.
As the primary adviser to the monarch, the role entails coordinating the official schedule of the King and Queen, providing counsel on major events like the Coronation, and managing various private matters. The position holds significant influence, functioning similarly to a permanent secretary in government.
Sir Clive is a former diplomat who earned a salary between £300,000 and £305,000. He became a recognizable figure during royal tours and state functions, notably assisting the transition when the King ascended the throne in 2022. He was also a prominent figure during the period when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex exited their working roles within the monarchy in 2020. In his memoir, Prince Harry referred to him as “the Wasp” while discussing those events.
A Palace representative stated that the King and Queen feel deep gratitude for Sir Clive’s loyal service and insightful guidance. Expressing his own sentiments, Sir Clive noted that serving the monarch during such a transformative period has been a profound privilege.
