Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp claimed a French patrol vessel discharged 17 rounds while he was participating in a media interview in the English Channel. The incident occurred as Philp spoke with BBC South East regarding small boat crossings.
BBC journalist Michael Keohan, who was conducting the interview, described hearing 17 distinct gunshots. Keohan reported observing a French patrol officer aiming a handgun toward the water. According to the journalist, there were no prior warnings or indications of a training exercise in the area, leaving the purpose of the gunfire unclear.
Philp expressed concern that the action served as a form of intimidation intended to discourage reporting on migrant activity. The BBC has requested a response from the French coastguard regarding the event.
