A local cricket match has gained international attention following claims that a fielder attempted to deceive an umpire by clicking his fingers. The North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League has launched a formal probe into the Division 2 fixture between Saltburn and Norton.
Video footage circulating online appears to show a Saltburn fielder clicking his fingers at the precise moment the ball moved past batter Noman Shabir, who was then caught by wicketkeeper Josh Bowes. The umpire subsequently ruled the batter out. Critics suggest the audible click was a deliberate ploy to simulate the sound of the ball hitting the bat.
Saltburn secured a 159-run victory and currently leads the league table. League officials confirmed a formal complaint has been filed and an inquiry is underway. In the interim, no further statements will be provided while the process continues.
The controversy has grown following additional claims of unsportsmanlike conduct. Rory Cotterill, captain of Middlesbrough’s second XI, alleged similar incidents occurred during a match against Saltburn last month. Meanwhile, wicketkeeper Josh Bowes has been in the spotlight for his impressive catch record, leading the league with 31 catches this season.
