The University of Lagos has retracted a contentious set of recommendations regarding sexual harassment that were aimed at female students. Public backlash forced the school to act, as the original message conflicted with the institution’s stated principles. Officials insisted that the school maintains a strict policy against sexual misconduct.
Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, the university’s communications lead, issued a statement on Monday clarifying the situation. The controversy began after a promotional banner created by the Student Affairs department circulated online.
The banner had suggested that female students avoid shaking hands with men, dressing in certain ways, or socializing without caution. It further advised students against accepting gifts, spending time alone with men in private areas, and viewing pornography.
Critics on social media argued that the advice shifted blame onto potential victims instead of holding perpetrators accountable. In light of this, school management removed the materials and apologized. The university emphasized its dedication to fostering a secure and inclusive campus that rejects all forms of sexual harassment.
