Nigeria claimed its fifth gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games as Onome Didih dominated the women’s 53kg weightlifting competition. She established new Commonwealth and Games records across all three segments of the event. Didih lifted 93kg in the snatch and 113kg in the clean and jerk, finishing with a record-breaking total of 206kg.
She finished well ahead of India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav, who secured silver with 199kg, and Canada’s Rebeka Groulx, who took bronze with 178kg. This victory follows Edidiong Joseph Umoafia’s gold medal in the men’s 71kg weightlifting category, where he set a record with a 319kg total.
These accomplishments build on Nigeria’s strong performance in the sport, including Esther Nworgu’s earlier gold in para powerlifting. To honor these efforts, the National Sports Commission updated its incentive program, offering $10,000 to each gold medalist. Furthermore, Director-General Bukola Olopade pledged an extra $2,000 to Didih as part of a specific athlete motivation initiative.
