A 19-year-old from Sudan, Chan Mathok Atak, has pleaded not guilty to charges of endangering lives during an English Channel crossing. The incident involved a large dinghy, roughly the length of a bus, which was intercepted by the Border Security Command while carrying more than 160 migrants toward Dover. Prosecutors allege that Atak was one of two individuals operating the overcrowded vessel, which was reportedly losing air when it was stopped.
Atak appeared at Margate Magistrates Court with an Arabic interpreter to enter his plea. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled for a follow-up hearing at Canterbury Crown Court on August 24. This case falls under recent legislation introduced by Sir Keir Starmer’s government, specifically designed to prosecute those who steer small boats across the Channel.
Data from the Home Office indicates that while the total volume of arrivals has decreased by approximately 45% compared to 2025, the average number of people per boat has increased. The vessel involved in this case set a new record for the highest number of passengers in a single boat, surpassing the previous record of 128.
