Chelsea has initiated discussions with Brighton concerning a possible transfer for veteran striker Danny Welbeck. The move aligns with manager Xabi Alonso’s goal of incorporating more seasoned professionals into the Chelsea squad.
BBC reports suggest the 35-year-old forward is interested in moving to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea remains hopeful about finalizing a deal for the former Manchester United and Arsenal player, marking a shift in the club’s recent recruitment strategy which previously prioritized younger prospects. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali noted in April that the club’s transfer approach required adjustments.
Welbeck is coming off his most successful league campaign, netting 13 goals in 37 Premier League matches last season. Since his 2020 arrival from Watford, he has recorded 51 goals across 201 appearances for Brighton. Although Brighton extended his contract in March through the 2026/27 season, the club has opted not to comment on the ongoing speculation.
The interest in Welbeck surfaces as Chelsea evaluates its current attacking roster. With players like Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu, and Nicolas Jackson all vying for positions, the team faces potential departures. Guiu may be sold or loaned, while Jackson, recently back from Bayern Munich, is linked to Aston Villa. Adding Welbeck would inject proven Premier League experience into a side that finished 10th last season, though it could also force further exits from a densely populated forward line.
