Sir Ian Wood, a prominent business leader and philanthropist based in Aberdeen, has passed away at the age of 84. His family shared the news, noting that he died peacefully in his home.
Widely regarded as a major figure in the UK oil and gas sector, Sir Ian transformed his family’s small ship repair firm into an international engineering powerhouse. He stepped down as CEO in 2006, shifting his focus to The Wood Foundation. This charitable organization is dedicated to addressing social and economic disparities, with particular emphasis on projects in Scotland and sub-Saharan Africa.
With a personal fortune valued at approximately £1.8bn, Sir Ian was among Scotland’s wealthiest individuals. Under his leadership, the Wood Group grew into an energy services giant with a market valuation exceeding £5bn. Following his retirement as chairman in 2012, he left behind a significant legacy in global industry.
Knighted in 1994 for his contributions to the energy industry, Sir Ian also held the Order of the Thistle, the highest honor of chivalry in Scotland. His family expressed that they will fondly remember his determination, generosity, and strong commitment to his loved ones.
