Ruth Nyong Secures Weightlifting Silver for Nigeria at Glasgow 2026

Nigerian weightlifter Ruth Nyong earned a silver medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, bringing her nation’s total medal count to seven.

Nigerian athlete Ruth Nyong captured a silver medal in the 48kg weightlifting category during the 2026 Commonwealth Games currently held in Glasgow. She achieved a total lift of 168kg to earn her spot on the podium.

Mirabai Chanu Saikhom of India dominated the competition, securing gold with a tournament-record total of 190kg. Irene Jane Henry representing Malaysia took home the bronze after lifting 167kg. Rounding out the field, Jo-Beth Deireragea placed fourth with 161kg, followed by Tammy Wong at 160kg, Nikole Roberts at 154kg, Alex Mackay at 142kg, and Janet Atieno Oduor at 133kg.

With this latest performance, Team Nigeria has now amassed seven total medals at the Glasgow games. This tally includes three gold medals and four silver medals. The national squad aims to increase their medal count as additional competitions continue throughout the evening.
