Team Wales secured a pair of bronze medals during a high-stakes night at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Para-swimmer Rhys Darbey and the 4x100m mixed freestyle relay team both earned podium finishes.
Darbey, a 19-year-old from Deeside, originally placed fourth in the S14 200m freestyle final. However, a disqualification for his teammate Dylan Broom, due to an early start, allowed Darbey to move up to third place. Previously, Darbey represented Wales at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
In the relay event, Olympic champion Matt Richards earned his first Commonwealth Games medal alongside Dan Jones, Rebecca Sutton, and Theodora Taylor. The team utilized a different lineup for the final compared to the qualification round, a strategy that succeeded when Taylor surged from fifth to third during the anchor leg.
These successes bring the total Welsh medal count to three, following a silver medal win by Ela Letton-Jones earlier in the competition. Other Welsh athletes also competed, including Rose Williams, who finished fourth in her final, and Lewis Fraser, who advanced to the 100m butterfly final scheduled for Sunday.
