The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has pledged that current issues with refuse collection will be resolved within the next six to eight months. Managing Director Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin shared this update during an environmental cleanup event in Badagry this past Saturday.
Gbadegesin clarified that local councils are working in partnership with the state agency, rather than taking over its duties. To improve efficiency, both the state government and individual councils are investing in new compactor trucks. The authority is also developing new waste disposal infrastructure, including active upgrades at the Olusosun site and the creation of new material recovery facilities to support recycling and revenue generation.
Addressing recent service delays caused by flooding at the Olusosun dumpsite, Gbadegesin noted that operations are normalizing as alternative access routes are opened. He requested that residents continue to pay Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators on time and avoid dumping trash on roadsides. Meanwhile, Princess Damilola James, the Lagos APC deputy governorship candidate, emphasized the importance of regular community sanitation to prevent flooding and foster local unity during the rainy season. She praised the state’s enforcement efforts and encouraged residents to maintain high standards of cleanliness.
