Former Senate Leader Ali Ndume has endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s initiative to grow the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions and hire an additional 28,000 personnel. Representing Borno South, Ndume noted that expanding the military force will bolster national security and speed up emergency response times.
The Federal Government recently confirmed the creation of four new divisions located in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo, and Benin City. Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga stated that this expansion highlights the administration’s dedication to modernizing the Armed Forces against Nigeria’s changing security threats.
Despite his support, Ndume emphasized that structural growth alone is insufficient. He advocated for the acquisition of five attack helicopters for every geopolitical zone and the formation of Special Task Force Brigades within the new divisions. He specifically requested that divisions be supplied with Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles, Armored Personnel Carriers, and aerial support to protect infantry troops.
Ndume highlighted that military success relies on four factors: training, equipment, ammunition, and motivation. He specifically addressed the need for better soldier welfare, pointing out that current morale is poor. He urged the government to raise the minimum basic salary for all security personnel to the equivalent of $300, suggesting that the administration should even consider borrowing if necessary to fund these vital improvements. Finally, Ndume praised front-line soldiers, particularly those in Operation Hadin Kai and the 82 Task Force Brigade in Gwoza, for their recent success in rescuing civilians from insurgents.
