Reality television personality Seyi Awolowo believes Nigeria must pivot its educational goals toward technology and innovation rather than remaining stuck on survival-based entrepreneurship. During a recent episode of the Vanguard Nigeria Meter Podcast, Awolowo argued that the country’s economic focus should have evolved past small-scale food trades like akara and kulikuli.
He pointed out that global powers such as the United States and China are currently dominating the artificial intelligence landscape. Meanwhile, he expressed concern that Nigeria is falling behind because its citizens are still largely concerned with basic daily survival. According to Awolowo, the educational system should foster aspirations that reach into high-level industries.
The former housemate also criticized the country’s political culture. He suggested that politicians frequently prioritize providing food and minor incentives—a concept often referred to as stomach infrastructure—instead of pushing for policies that drive technological progress and long-term economic development. He questioned why voters are kept in a cycle of subsistence rather than being encouraged to participate in a knowledge-driven global economy.
