Despite this public warning, the President noted that both leaders have provided personal assurances that their countries are not arming Iran or engaging in the current conflict. Trump revealed that Xi Jinping explicitly pledged during their Beijing summit that China would not facilitate any arms transfers to the Islamic Republic. A similar commitment was reportedly made by Vladimir Putin, regardless of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
These statements follow previous Western intelligence suggestions that Russia may have provided drones to Tehran and that China might have considered supplying air defense technology. Meanwhile, Iran has faced intense scrutiny for executing over 100 individuals in the last month to curb massive anti-government protests. Human rights groups expressed grave concern as these state-sanctioned killings intensified following the start of hostilities between Iran, the United States, and Israel in March.
