13 Dead as Mining Site Collapses in Plateau
A mining site at Maiagwagwa in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State collapsed, resulting in the deaths of at least 13 people.
The Chairman of the LGA, Dr. Joshua Riti, confirmed the tragic incident to newsmen on Monday, November 11, 2024, in Jos. Expressing sorrow over the loss of lives, Riti noted that the collapse occurred on Saturday.
The mining site is located near the borders of Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North LGAs, and seven of the victims were from Bassa LGA.
“This is an unfortunate incident, these young people were only out in search of a means of livelihood,” he said.
“They went out to put their energies to good use to sustain and meet up with the current economic hardship in the country but met their untimely death
“I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy.”
Reports indicate that most of the deceased were young people between the ages of 18 and 30.
Six of the victims were from Kiche land in Rukuba chiefdom.
