Former Big Brother Naija star Seyi Awolowo has asserted that corporate entities and their executives bear responsibility for the rising anti-intellectual culture in Nigeria, labeled as the “Olodo uprising.” During his appearance on The Nigeria Meter Podcast, he argued that the country’s preference for prioritizing entertainment over scholarly achievement is damaging the national psyche.
Awolowo reminisced about a time when academic success was highly esteemed, citing programs like the Cowbell Mathematics Championship and various school clubs as vital motivators for youth. He emphasized that intelligence was once widely admired, providing a clear path for students to earn scholarships and professional recognition.
In contrast, he expressed frustration at the lack of fanfare for Nigerian students who achieve success on the global stage. Using a recent international spelling competition as an example, he questioned why these bright individuals do not receive the same hero’s welcome typically reserved for social media influencers and celebrities.
Furthermore, he criticized major brands for fixating on social media metrics rather than championing intellectual role models. He noted the irony of CEOs complaining about the quality of the local workforce while simultaneously neglecting to promote academic excellence, effectively contributing to the very skill gap they lament. When confronted with the argument that companies must prioritize marketing, Awolowo challenged the morality of sacrificing the nation’s intellectual growth for commercial gain.
