The 2026 Commonwealth Games commenced with a vibrant opening ceremony in Glasgow, marking the first time King Charles III has presided over the event as Head of the Commonwealth. The King and Queen Camilla made a memorable entrance at the Hydro Arena, arriving in a prop styled after the iconic Tardis from Doctor Who.
Alongside the royals sat Prime Minister Andy Burnham, marking his first major public appearance since succeeding Sir Keir Starmer. The parade featured athletes from 74 nations, with the Scottish contingent receiving a thunderous ovation as they entered the arena in kilts. The show included theatrical tributes to Glasgow, featuring performances by Nathan Evans, Callum Beattie, and KT Tunstall. A notable visual highlight was the appearance of a giant Loch Ness Monster figure.
Organized in just 18 months after Victoria withdrew as host, the event utilizes repurposed venues from the 2014 Games. Commonwealth Sport president Donald Rukare praised Glasgow for stepping in to ensure the continuity of the competition. During his address, King Charles emphasized global environmental preservation, specifically calling for action against plastic pollution in the world’s oceans.
The sporting competition will continue for ten days, concluding on August 2. The first medals are expected to be awarded in Para-powerlifting on Friday.
