A fresh political confrontation has emerged in Oyo State regarding the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s attempt to access state financial records. The All Progressives Congress has accused Governor Seyi Makinde of obstructing justice, while the state government maintains it simply sought legal clarification on the anti-graft agency’s reach.
This dispute follows a Federal High Court ruling in Ibadan that blocked the EFCC from acting on a broad request for financial documents and contracts spanning 2021 to 2025. Justice Nkeonye Maha labeled the commission’s request as speculative, ruling that investigations must focus on specific allegations rather than acting as a fishing expedition.
Olawale Sadare, spokesperson for the Oyo APC, condemned the governor’s actions as shameful. The party argues that public officials must remain transparent and claimed the administration is attempting to hide systemic corruption. The APC highlighted several areas of concern, including the renovation of the Lekan Salami Stadium, various infrastructure projects, and alleged issues with civil servant salary deductions, vowing that these matters will eventually face scrutiny.
Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the governor’s media adviser, rejected these claims. He explained that the government sought judicial review because the EFCC’s request was an unspecific, blanket demand. He emphasized that the administration remains transparent and is not avoiding scrutiny, but rather protecting the rule of law by ensuring that investigative requests are lawful and focused. The state government maintained that it stands ready to cooperate once the commission issues a properly defined, evidence-based inquiry.
