Members of the Igbo community in Cross River State have voiced serious concerns regarding persistent illegal levies and daily intimidation from unauthorized groups, noting that these issues are severely hampering local commerce. During a gathering in Calabar attended by Ohanaeze Ndigbo representatives, business owners, and APC members, the community underscored the damaging impact of these practices.
Chief Agu Prince, the 2nd Vice President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, explained that groups carrying official-looking receipts are systematically harassing traders. He suggested that these actors may be operating with support from certain government officials. Furthermore, the community called for urgent action to address overcrowded market conditions to mitigate fire risks.
While community leaders praised Governor Bassey Otu for his efforts to improve security and his inclusion of Igbo citizens in his administration, they highlighted the urgent need for better road infrastructure, particularly in the Northern Senatorial District, to boost trade. Chief Dike Ejike also requested clarification regarding the recent reduction in primary school teacher salaries in the north.
In response, Cross River State APC Chairman, Mr. Chris Etta, assured the attendees that their grievances would be brought before Governor Otu. He noted the current economic strain on Nigerians but expressed optimism that the government’s policies would eventually stabilize the situation.
