Across Nigeria’s 774 local government regions, the National Population Commission (NPC) has inaugurated 4,011 digital centers to streamline the recording of births and deaths. This upgrade is a core component of the nation’s effort to transition from outdated manual procedures to a modernized civil registration framework.
Speaking at a Calabar press briefing on Thursday, Barrister Alex Ukam, the Federal Commissioner for Cross River State, represented NPC Chairman Dr. Aminu Ibrahim Yusuf. Ukam noted that the digital transition officially launched on July 1, 2026, with an ambitious roadmap to increase the count to 8,000 centers nationwide.
This implementation of the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system ensures that vital life events are tracked electronically, promptly, and accurately. The platform enables round-the-clock online access, minimizes physical paperwork, and enhances the precision of national data. Furthermore, the database is built for secure integration with existing government identity systems.
By partnering with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the NPC aims to unify data collection efforts at the grassroots level. Ukam emphasized that this shift supports the government’s digital transformation goals, ensuring every citizen possesses a legal identity while providing the reliable demographic information required for national planning. Additionally, the commission plans to adjust service fees and is currently reviewing the legal framework to handle official name-change requests.
