The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has formally requested that the death penalty be applied to individuals convicted of terrorism across Nigeria. Led by Executive Director Professor Ishaq Akintola, the organization insists that those found guilty of engaging in terrorist acts must face execution within one week of their sentencing.
This demand follows a recent ruling by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Abuja Federal High Court, who sentenced Abubakar Abba and Mahmud Usman to life imprisonment. Professor Akintola criticized this verdict as overly soft, characterizing terrorists as ruthless criminals who pose a significant threat. He argued that housing such individuals within standard correctional facilities is hazardous, as they may continue to orchestrate attacks while incarcerated. Consequently, MURIC is urging the Federal Government to implement the necessary legal framework to ensure these swift executions are carried out.
